Gemma Dante is the owner of a new age shop. And oh yeah, she's a witch, and as a result, an outcast within her own devout Italian Catholic family. She and her friend Frankie cast a love spell, and all that Gemma knows is that he lover will have blue eyes. When three firemen practically knock her door down because of a complaint of smoke, they discover her smelly incense instead. Fireman Sean Keneally's blue eyes capture her eyes... Though Sean is a fireman, he is tired of her stinky incense and figures the best way to get her to stop is to don his fire gear.

Sean and Gemma meet again at a party and she learns he has the apartment above her and realizes the trick he pulled. But both are instantly attracted and quickly share a night of passion. When he discovers her altar and she admits she's a wtich, he can't get to the door quick enough. But soon they are dating, though he wants her to keep her profession and hobby a secret from his family and friends.

When Sean is involved in a fire rescue and does not find a child (his buddy does), he gets depressed and has trouble with his guilt. Gemma tries to get him to open up, but it just makes him grow more distant and the relationship suffers. The only place their relationship makes sense is in bed, and with family, work, and friend pressures mounting, they break up.

Gemma's Nonna is diagnosed with Alzheimer's and the family rallies to take care of her so Nonna can stay out of a nursing home. After a tragedy brings them together again, can Sean and Gemma get past their differences to make their relationship work?

The third of Martin's New York Blades stories (this one is only peripheral, as Gemma is Michael Dante's cousin), this story stands on its own. But with nothing in common, so little chemistry, and the fact that they spend the majority of the book apart, it's kind of hard to root for them. I was disappointed with the romantic aspect of this one, but where Martin excelled is in Sean's grief and guilt about his job. This brought a so-so tale up a notch.

This is the first book I've read by Deidre Martin, and it will be the last. The two central characters are believable personalities, but definately not a believable couple. They are so mismatched that I couldn't bring myself to even finish the book. I tried, I even made myself read more than 200 pages before I gave up, and I don't think I've ever done that before.
