For parents, teachers, and other professionals seeking practical guidance about ways to help children with learning problems, this book provides a comprehensive look at learning differences ranging from dyslexia to dysgraphia, to attention problems, to giftedness. In The Mislabeled Child, the authors describe how a proper understanding of a childs unique brain-based strengths can be used to overcome many different obstacles to learning. They show how children are often mislabeled with diagnoses that are too broad (ADHD, for instance) or are simply inaccurate. They also explain why medications are often not the best ways to help children who are struggling to learn. The authors guide readers through the morass of commonly used labels and treatments, offering specific suggestions that can be used to help children at school and at home. This book offers extremely empowering information for parents and professionals alike. The Mislabeled Child examines a full spectrum of learning disorders, from dyslexia to giftedness, clarifying the diagnoses and providing resources to help. The Eides explain how a learning disability encompasses more than a behavioral problem; it is also a brain dysfunction that should be treated differently.

THE MISLABELED CHILD: HOW UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD'S UNIQUE LEARNING STYLE CAN OPEN THE DOOR TO SUCCESS provides parents, teachers and educators a fine, clear guide to children who are different, how diagnoses often fail, and how to look beyond labels to find the basics of a child's problems. Flaws in current methods of evaluation and diagnosis, especially by non-specialists, accompany tools and information based on the latest research along with first-hand accounts by the children themselves.

Brock and Fernette Eide are knowledgable, compassionate, experienced and speak to their audience in an authentic and easily understood voice. After years of doctor's, therapies, tests, etc - one conversation with them opened up a world of understanding that no other phd or professional could provide. More importantly - they can relate with the children in a positive manner. I've had to educate our school about learning differences. Every educator must read this book. There are so many children going through years of frustration in school that is unnecessary. This book will empower and inspire you.

In today's world of ADHD escapism, learning disability over-diagnosis and medication-happy classroom environments, The Mislabeled Child is a much needed and called for resource for frazzled and frustrated parents.
I know all too well the pressure a parent of a "special" child feels and how one label can affect the child's entire school career. The Mislabeled Child shows parents how their child's disability is not a hindrance, rather, a different ability.
Doctors Brock and Fernette Eide guide parents through obtaining an accurate diagnosis of their child's learning and behavioral issues. They then show us how to positively harness our child's different ability and direct it onto a path that will turn it into the strength it really is.
Three cheers for the Eides. Thank you for making a common problem common knowledge. Thank you for providing a voice of assurance and empowerment. Thank you for arming parents with the information they truly need to help see their children through to success.

What a wonderful book. I have to keep going back and re-reading portions of it! This book is a great tool for parents and educators alike. As a mother of three, ages 12, 10, and 7 I can better understand their various learning styles and apply techniques that will enable each of my children to process information in the best way for them. I have one child identified as a gifted learner and the other two are not, the Eides have made it clear how to cater to each of their learning styles. It is terrific to have a chapter by chapter breakdown of different styles and possible problem areas along with practical applications on how to address those specific strengths or weaknesses each child may exhibit. I only wish I would have had all this information when my oldest was about 4.
