Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles: a Manual of Elegant Knitting Techniques and Patterns this question feed

asked by reader99 on November 29, 2006 7:44 AM
This is the first sock knitting book devoted to teaching the simple mysteries of two-circular-needle-sock-knitting, a vastly more efficient and easier method which is rapidly gaining converts. Eleven original designs, clearly worded instructions, photographs, charts, a section on translating traditional patterns to the two-circular method, and abundant tips and tricks have been put together with great care and a generous sprinkling of humor. The author answers all of those subtle, almost unframeable questions a new sock knitter has, as well as delighting seasoned sock knitters with innovative sock architecture and techniques.

I had heard about this method vs. the 5 double-pointed needles that I normally use but never seen it started. The illustrations are just what you need to begin knitting using this method. It is very clear. I just finished my first sock this way and it was pretty cool.

This looks to be a self-published book. Although the technique is catching on with a lot of sock knitters, it would benefit the author to get the book professionally published in a neater, cleaner format. The crudness of the text is distracting to learning the technique.

The book is OK. While is has been very highly touted - both in yarn shops and on-line, don't expect miracles. It doesn't explain the 2-needle technique very well, but the technique is simple enough that you can figure it out after experimenting a bit. I would not suggest this book for a beginner, since I don't think her explanations are the best. I had to improvise a bit to get the socks to fit correctly. And while she raves over Addi Turbo needles, they are a little slippery and you will find stitches dropping off your needle if you aren't careful.

Man oh man, I love this woman and her hippieness.... BUT, this book has like 2... maybe 2 and a half illustrations on how to actually DO this technique!

Two illustrations for the actual technique, and the rest pics of fancy arse socks???

Forget this!! I've a better method to knit socks on just one small circumference circular needle!

There is absolutely NO instruction on how to do this two-needle method! How did this book get published, and HOW do many of the knitting mavens praise this book highly??

Very disappointed.. In fact, I'll give this book away to anyone who wants it... maybe for an old ball of sock yarn.

This book sounded to me like it would work for the never-knitted-a-sock-and-want-to-avoid-all-those-double-pointeds kind of knitter such as myself. After puzzling over it at length, I've decided that A)it's written for the folks who've already struggled through a pair of socks on the DPNs, and B) I'm going to ask my accomplished knitter friend to explain to me what the book is talking about (in which case I could have just asked her and saved myself the expense of the book.)

As an aside, I was surprised at the number of typographical errors.

Nice idea, but if you're a beginner, GET HELP!
