Two years after being released from Camp Green Lake, Armpit is home in Austin, Texas, trying to turn his life around. But it’s hard when you have a record, and everyone expects the worst from you. The only person who believes in him is Ginny, his 10-year old disabled neighbor. Together, they are learning to take small steps. And he seems to be on the right path, until X-Ray, a buddy from Camp Green Lake, comes up with a get-rich-quick scheme. This leads to a chance encounter with teen pop sensation, Kaira DeLeon, and suddenly his life spins out of control, with only one thing for certain. He’ll never be the same again.

In his first major novel since Holes, critically acclaimed novelist Louis Sachar uses his signature wit combined with a unique blend of adventure and deeply felt characters to explore issues of race, the nature of celebrity, the invisible connections that determine a person’s life, and what it takes to stay on course. Doing the right thing is never a wrong choice–but a small step in the right direction.

This book is the sequel to the book Holes and Armpit is in the book and now he's finally got the summer to him self or not. The characters in Small Steps are Armpit, Ginny, X-Ray, and Kaira Deleon. The book starts out with Armpit and what he wants to work on in the summer. The things are... 1: Graduate from high school. 2: Get a job. 3: Save his money
4: Avoid situations that might turn into violent. 5: Lose the name Armpit.
Ginny is a next-door neighbor of Armpit. Ginny has cerebral palsy. It's cool that Armpit likes her even though she's different. Kaira Deleon is a pop star singer. X-Ray wants to get tickets to go to her concert. But get's him self in a little trouble. When Armpit and Ginny go to the concert Ginny has a seizure and gets to meet Kaira Deleon. Now if you want to see what Kaira and Armpit do next check out the book and read it!

Small Steps is a book about a boy named Thedore(Armpit) who tries to turn his life around. While doing so, his friend X-Ray gets him into this scheme to sell tickets to the biggest popstar sensation, Kaira DeLeon. Miraculously, through his disabled nieghbor he develops a relationship with Kaira.
Armpit needed a stuffed animal for his ruler-of the-world speach. He asked his neighbor, Ginny if he could borrow one of hers since she was younger than him and he didn't have one. Ginny was showing Armpit all of her stuffed animals. There was one thing in common with all of them. They all had something wrong with them. Hoo Hooter is blind, Daisy is deaf, Roscoe is paralyzed and Coo has leukemia.
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a pleasurable book to read. It's a quick read book that's also a spin off of the book Holes. This book really gets inside of your head and makes you think about the situation. Who was right and who was wrong or if there wasn't a problem with anything. This book helps you think of peoples lives that are totaly different than yours. Small Steps will help you think of what you do more carefully.
