I'm a new fan to Christine Feehan so I've not yet had a chance to sample some of her other works. But after reading so many romance books, I thought that there wouldn't be another story that would move or surprise me...until this one.
Shadow Game is a colorful miasma of action, sensuality and brilliance, beautifully woven into a really, really great storyline. But the best of it is the dialogue: It's a great blend of wit, romance, and tough-guy talk that was mesmerizing and entertaining. The plot unfolds at a slow pace but the almost animal attraction between Lily and Ryland hits you hard in the face from the moment they meet. There are so many twists to the story that you're left with a few unanswered questions, but the end leaves you satisfied and anxious for the next installment.
This leads me to my one complaint about this book: the multiple sexual liaisons between Ryland and Lily were overkill. I thought they drew attention from the main plot and sometimes diluted the intensity of the danger they were in. As it was, the dialogue and narration alone were already enough to convince me of the magnitude of their feelings for each other. Everything else was just unnecessary excess.
Regardless, I still recommend this as a great read.

Overall, I thought the book was okay. The plot was actually very believable, and I think many people would have liked it better if Feehan had done two things: 1) Focus more on the plot and on the characters; 2)Reconsider how many romance scenes there needs to be in one book.
Seriously, the romance scenes (albeit pretty good and 'creative') sort of killed it.

I was a little surprised when Christine Feehan deviated from her magic centered works and decided to write a sci-fi, militaristic series. I could not be anymore impressed! The Ghostwalker series (I'm glad she decided to use "game" for the titles) showcases how diverse and talented Christine Feehan is as a writer.
Along with other military soldiers, Captain Ryland Miller volunteered for a government funded psychic enhancement program. The men begin to suspect something is amiss when a few of their fellow soldiers have died and they've been put under constant surveillance. They're even locked in state of the art cages.
The experiments are being conducted by Dr. Peter Whitney. Before his disappearance, he asks his daughter Lily to help him. Lily enters the scene blind, and is thrown into the tail end of a conspiracy. Much to her surprise, she has a deep, instantaneous connection with Ryland. Ryland and Lily complement and strengthen one another. Working together, they try to uncover the dirty secrets harming them and their friends.
This is a good read for those who enjoy scientific oriented, government conspiracy stories. The various personalities of the characters are written well. Lily and Peter Whitney display sufficient medical knowledge with the drive of a mad scientist. Peter Whitney being the crazier of the two, seemingly lacking compassion. Ryland is the golden boy. He's the fearless leader who cares about his friends and always tries to do the right thing. His passion and boy next door playfulness balances out Lily's prim, reclusive ice princess persona. When they tease each other, it's cute and funny.
As usual, Christine Feehan's sex scenes are sizzling hot and fit the main couple.
