This is the Behind the scenes story of the classic RANKIN/BASS Holiday TV Special "RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER." Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass Produced the Highest Rated, Longest Running Television Special (Not just Holiday Special) of all-time! This is a 216 page (8 color) account of what it took to put it all together. It has a FOREWORD by ARTHUR RANKIN, JR. and an AFTERWORD by ANDREW STANTON (PIXAR/MONSTERS, INC.). It also features the entire 1963 draft of the teleplay by Romeo Muller which includes many scenes that were changed and deleted. There are photographic storyboards of the original 1964 RANKIN/BASS Produced GENERAL ELECTRIC commercials and an in-depth chapter on 'ANIMAGIC,' which is the Stop-Motion brand name for this unique type of animation used in the special. This book also contains NEW art created by Art legends Jack Davis, Paul Coker, Jr., Don Duga, Patrick Owsley, David Sheldon, Lane Smith, Kirsten Ulve, Mitch O' Connell, Steve Rude, Jim Engel and more! It also contains info on the rest of the talented cast: Burl Ives, Tony Peters, Romeo Muller, Johnny Marks, Maury Laws and all the GREAT Canadian talent including Bill Giles, Bernard Cowan, Billie Mae Richards, Paul Soles and more!

Although the author's passion for Rankin/Bass productions (Rudolph in particular) is very evident, I was a little disappointed that this book really wasn't purely dedicated to the making of the holiday classic which the title would imply. There is a great deal of space dedicated to the voice talents that brought the beloved characters to life but in my opinion not enough dedicated to the "animagic" work done on Rudolph. After reading the book I felt the $30 price tag was a bit steep.

RUDOLPH finally gets an historic treatment, from how it was done before the computer-generated wizards of the end of the century through the final script, notes and often tricky trail to were all of that stuff wound up.
An impressive bit of modern history-writing. Some TV fans may want more photos, but the wealth of written material will more than satisfy animation fans. Nicely researched and a fascinating collection of stuff that would have vanished if not for this kind of dedicated preservation.

This insightful, intensely well-research book is the definitive look at the inner-workings of a classic animated TV special. Whether you're a fan of the show, a fan of vintage stop-motion animation, a die-hard baby-boomer, or just plain old in a yuletide mood, this book delivers the goods! Don't miss out!
