I hear all the AA stuff. My wife is into even though I think she is looking for the "folk wisdom". But hey, wisdom is wisdom. So AA is on to something. I tend to see Jacks view of AA more strongly about AA in the larger social context. And I hated the AA program.
So I quit drinking more than six years ago. This book helped me get my head straight. I recomend it to freinds that think they drink too much.
The book does mention that after you stop drinking you may become much more interested in the spiritual life. I have had that experience. This book didn't adress the spiritual life beyond that. I feel like it is a better book for that choice. Amazon has plenty of other books to adress the spiritual life (my favorite is Radical Acceptance).

I found this to be the type of book that I could skim, mark up some, and then go back to the parts that were helpful to me. I decided to write this review because it worked for me. Wow, did it ever work! Easily!

This is a life changing book. It provides a completely different way of looking at alcoholism. It places personal responsibility on the addict which will make a lot of sense to certain people. This book may not be for everyone but for those who understand its logic it can make a real difference. It is also good for family members trying to understand why their loved one drinks so much. It's heavily against AA (calling it a "cult") and I find the tone very unappealing with regard to AA, but the core message is right on the money.

I have been addicted to sex for about 13 years now. I have read various books and have tried various techniques for overcoming my addiction, but nothing has helped like this book. After reading this book and applying the book's principles, I have been free from my addiction for 10 months now. I have found nothing else, which has been as effective as this program. I am currently a medical student with a background in neuroscience and the philosophy presented in the book, although certainly more simplistically said, is right in line with current biological models of addiction. I believe my understanding of this fact was certainly one reason this book's techniques worked for me. I don't know if it will work for everyone, but I tried just about everything else; from sex addicts annonymous, to personal therapy from trained therapists and nothing worked. I am eternally grateful for Mr. Trimpey and his presentation of this material.
