Mixed Media Explorations: Blending Paper, Fabric and Embellishment to Create Inspired Designs
asked by freedrink on November 9, 2006 3:35 PM
With a sense of humor and creative abandon, renowned mixed-media artist Beryl Taylor shows you how surprisingly easy it is to turn fabric, stitch, and embellishment into artistic treasures to keep and share. Using her own art as examples, Beryl gives step-by-step instructions for making projects like greeting cards, wall hangings, and books using the latest mixed-media techniques, all the while encouraging readers to follow their own instincts and experiment.
In Mixed-Media Explorations you'Äôll learn how to: apply basic design principles like layering, highlighting motifs, and creating grids to give your art depth and meaning; use six simple embroidery stitches to add interest and texture; turn favorite papers into fabrics that can then be stitched or quilted; 'Äòage'Äô your art by etching, burning, and tearing; create richness with metallic threads, paint, and rub-ons; 'Äòembed'Äô fibers and found objects; use everyday items like brown grocery bags, wallpaper scraps, and bleach to create texture; stitch through metal.

I think that the first reviewer meant to give this book 5-stars since she highly recommended it. Read her review and dismiss the two-stars rating.
I own this book and it is candy to my eyes. Stunning work - excellently depicted so you can see the details. Well worth every penny you spend to add this to your library.

I have admired Beryl Taylor's artwork for a long time, and eagerly looked forward to this book. Although I don't use fabric and sewing in my mixed media artwork, I am fully inspired
with the ideas presented here and will gladly refer to this book to "jumpstart" my creativity in the studio. The beautiful detailed photography does justice to her distinctive artwork, providing lots of ideas that can be translated into paper, etc.
Best of all, the artist brings contemporary verve and love of strong color to Medieval themes and motifs. A terrific book!
