I am a medical student and I want to dis-recommend this book, especially to medical students. What makes a biology textbook good in my opinion is above all the quality of the pictures. And since the pictures in this book are poorly designed and poorly laid out, I can only dis-recommend it.

"A picture says a thousand words", especially so in biology and medical science. Before you read the details of some molecular structure or mechanism, you want to see the basic idea in visual form. This requires that the figures be planned out well by people who know the material, that they be executed by good artists; and that the figures be laid out well on the page (big enough, near enough to the relevant text, with good captions, etc.). None of these things have been done competently in this book.

I would give it less than three stars if it wasn't for the writing, which is generally pretty clear and not overly intricate.

I purchased this book for my own use and found it to be rather invaluable.

This is very direct-to-the-point and concise. The only problem I noticed was as others have mentioned, the pictures are not very clear, sometimes difficult to make out what you are looking at, but the value of this book overall makes that easy to overlook.

This is an easy book to get into, very informative, I guess some might consider it bland because it is indeed in textbook form, it still remains a valuable learning and resource tool. I'd recommend this to anyone!

It was excellent throughout but it needs to have arrows on many of the pictures to help you figure out what you are looking at and some of the diagrams are so simplified that its hard to figure out what is a happening.

This book covers every medical microbiology topic that is needed for class exams or the USLME. The book is intensely filled with very elaborated information that any medical student needs to pass his or her exams. My study group and I also used the following for class exams and the USLME and found it extremely helpful. I also purchased this book on amazon which is the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi (ISBN: 0971999635)
The questions in this study guide were on target with my class exams and was an excellent reference for the USLME. Buy both books. Most definitely!!
