Barbecued Wings Charlotte Style (p. 44) makes this book worth its fantastic Amazon price. Quadrupled the recipe and served the wings to a backyard party of 75 during the 2006 Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Look forward to preparing more of Mario's tailgating delights.

just not the concept of a celebrity writing one. At first I didn't think I needed a celebrity telling me what I'd been doing for years. But after meeting Mario at Charlotte, I changed my mind. He really is into NASCAR!
The book is easy to use and understand. Great recipes and in the end I did indeed learn some new things.

Don't be put off by the NASCAR connection to this book. Batali doesn't let the rest of us -- or food -- down. This is just a different style of food than we are accustomed to from him, but, oh, is it worthwhile! Don't think this book is usable just for tail-gating and don't be discouraged by the outdoor cooking aspect of the recipes.

Not all of us can, for many reasons, take advantage of outdoor grills and we need not feel cheated. Everything here can easily be done indoors. The food is suitable for the kitchen table, the deck, a picnic, or just to bring something special to an everyday family dinner. How about barbecued meat loaf with corn and sweet onion salad? Finish off with Mario's Apple Brown Betty and you have a real pleaser.

Tonight we'll try Leo's Sloppy Joes with creamy cole slaw. The rain is torrential out there so we'll do this inside.

Back to that limoncello vinaigrette - I usually prefer mine over ice, but if anyone will go catch me a snapper, I'll try it. Mario has not led me astray yet, and I trust his ideas.
