This is the only one you need. Consistent, to the point reviews and a rating system that you can rely on. Been following his ratings for 37 years.

I always buy Leonard Maltin's paperback Movie Guide every year. I have found that it contains a review of every movie I look for (except, obviously movies that were released after the publication date).

Years ago I bought two other rather large movie guide books, only to find that they were not nearly as complete and comprehensive as Maltin's Book.

My only complaint with the paperback version is the size of the print - a little small for my 70-year-old eyes.

Next year, I will visit one of the larger booksellers and ask if there is a version with larger print.

As a movie buff,I find this book is the best of it's type. Always as bang up to date as possible, Leonard's reviews are unbiased, full of facts, yet concise and entertaining. Other review tomes can be a wee bit biased against newer movies or populist films, but Leonard's quiet unassuming manner serves him well every year with each new volume. If you're fed-up with Halliwell or any of the other books in this genre, try this one, I think you'll like it!

If your world is bounded by the borders of America then this guide will be just fine. It patronisingly relieves you of all decisions as to 'suitability' and completely ignores a wide genre of movies. As an example (I can give you more) try looking up the world-reknown Italian Director Tinto Brass. Maltin thinks he released only one movie - Caligula - and he doesn't rate that as worth watching! No, its not his best movie - but neither is it his only movie. Anything vaguely 'sexy' gets trashed and I wonder which monastry Maltin grew up in.
So if you want only the Mary Poppins and sugar sweet, and don't care about the wide range of movies from serious directors and producers abroad, then - go for it. But if you really want to know what is and has happened in the wide world of movies then don't waste your time or money on this
