From the New York Times bestselling author of Ransom comes an exquisite tender tale of love, adventure and passion!

In feudal England, Elizabeth Montwright barely escaped the massacre that destroyed her family and exiled her from her ancestral castle. Bent on revenge, she rode again through the fortress gates, disguised as a peasant...to seek aid from Geoffrey Berkley, the powerful baron who had routed the murderers.

He heard her pleas, resisted her demands, and vowed to seduce his beautiful subject. Yet as Elizabeth fought the warrior's caresses, love flamed for this gallant man who must soon champion her cause...and capture her spirited heart!

...then by all means read this book!

I rated this three stars for the lovely scenery and initial character development. But Geoffrey's boorish ways and short temper combined with Elizabeth's inability to see beyond the end of her nose when it comes to family matters quickly wore thin. Do you enjoy it when the protagonist violently shakes his wife (for "disobedience") followed by a declaration to "taste [her] nectar"? I didn't.

Let me shortcut the book for you:

Days: spent arguing (sometimes very publicly and violently)
Nights: spent making mad, passionate love (in spite of any problems throughout the day)

This is my second Garwood read and I have to say, I'm not tempted to pick up another.

I happen to love Garwood's writing style, intrigue, and (of course) romance; however, this novel fell short for me. Geoffery wanted Elizabeth for her striking independence, charisma, and strength of character in the beginning, but then he spent the entire novel beating it out of her. Maybe I'm overly romantic, but when I read a romance novel, I want the sweeping hero--not the pigheaded lout.

Despite this lackluster novel, I will continue reading her historical novels and enjoy her strong-willed female characters and dashing heroes.
