Criminal Investigation for the Professional Investigator (Professional Investigators)

Aimed at the busy professional who aspires to become certified in the field, Criminal Investigation for the Professional Investigator details essential techniques a trained investigator will be called upon to perform during the course of a career. The book is authored by a veteran of the NYPD who went on to launch and operate two successful private investigation agencies. It covers crime scenes, death investigations, the art of interrogation, and specific criminal investigations. It also provides important strategies for making arrests and testifying in courtrooms, details the most effective investigative tools to use, and explains the role of criminal defense investigators.

As a retired LEO investigator now in the private investigation field this book brought out many tips and procedures that were forgotten over the years. It was well written, well referenced, and easy to read. The book took the reader through various different types and phases of criminal investigations. I was so impressed with the book that I gave my son, who is a relatively new criminal investigator with a nearby Sheriff's Department, my copy to read. He has found the contents to be very valuable in his everyday performance of his job. Hopefully we'll get some more of this quality from Mr. Soone in the near future.

To paraphrase SecDef Rumsfeld's best line: sometimes you don't know what you don't know until you know it. Even though I have been a professional investigator for 25 years, this book reminded me of many things that I had forgotten, and taught me a few things that I "didn't know that I didn't know".
This book really shines when it goes into "what to look for" mode - i.e. "Causes For Suspicion", "Profiling", processing of crime scenes, etc. From personal experience, I can attest that the section covering Criminal Defense Investigators is right on the money. I intend to shameless steal a few sentences from the introductory paragraph of that chapter for my next lecture.
Even when the author throws something at the reader only as an aside, it's often very useful.
And, BTW, the saying "those who can't do, teach" doesn't apply to this book's author. Warren Sonne has been "in the field" for 30+ years, and is considered by most professional investigators, including myself, to be one of the best.
This book will hopefully replace many of the aging "Investigation" texts now being used in police academies. If you are interested in a truly useful overview to professional investigation, this is one of the best I've seen.
