A strange imprisonment
Beauty has never liked her nickname. She is thin and awkward; it is her two sisters who are the beautiful ones. But what she lacks in looks, she can perhaps make up for in courage.
When her father comes home with the tale of an enchanted castle in the forest and the terrible promise he had to make to the Beast who lives there, Beauty knows she must go to the castle, a prisoner of her own free will. Her father protests that he will not let her go, but she answers, "Cannot a Beast be tamed?"
Robin McKinley's beloved telling illuminates the unusual love story of a most unlikely couple: Beauty and the Beast.
Reviews
I really didn't think much about it when I first picked up 'Beauty' to read. Then I could not put it down! Robin Mckinley took a very good but very old story and breathed beautiful, rich, grand life back into it!
If you only read one telling of the beauty and the beast story, please have it be this book!
Lilith. :)

Any teen who enjoys good fantasy should have this book on their shelf. If they don't, then then need to go out and buy it immediately. McKinley has written many works, beloved by teens, but her original and first published work, BEAUTY is by far her best.
Beauty is the retelling of Beauty and the Beast, beginning with the downfall of Honour's (Beauty's real name) father's trade business to their modest livelihoods in the country, to the gothic home of the beast. McKinley's offering beats the reprisal she made years after for an adult version, which bombed in the eyes of many readers. The adult version seemed more of a science fiction version with the ending and all-around reading unsatisfying with its unanswered questions.
Take my words for it and whether you're a teen or adult who came across this book, buy it and be truly swept away by McKinley's great story telling. You'll not regret it.
My recommendations are Donna Jo Napoli, Patricia Wrede and Sherwood Smith
