8 Minute Meditation: Quiet Your Mind. Change Your Life. this question feed

In recent years, mainstream Americans have begun to come around to meditation in a big way-and scientific studies are suggesting that the physical and mental benefits are solid and real. But to many, it remains something mystical and inaccessible...and spiritually-oriented tomes on the market don't do much to make it easier.

As interest in meditation continues to grow, this book offers a simple, no-nonsense program to help beginners experience reduced stress and increased focus in only eight minutes a day. Designed by meditation expert and bestselling author Victor Davich, this program teaches the basic principles of meditation while clearing up the misconceptions and myths that too often get in the way.

I had unsucessfully tried meditation in the past. My instructer started with 20 minutes which I found too long to do daily with no promise of results.
When I heard about this book, I thought that I could commit myself to 8 minutes a day. I read the introduction, made the pledge to try it for at least the 8 weeks and got started. Surprise - the 8 minutes flew by and, best of all, I was getting better at meditating every week and actually saw my stress level decreasing. I felt more relaxed overall. On occasions when I was starting to feel stress getting the better of me, I went to a quiet spot and meditated and found that my emotional balance was restored. I finished the 8 weeks and went on to the "upgrade". I intend to continue meditating daily.
The instructions are super clear, the question/answer sections are extremely helpful and the book is entertaining reading, too.
If you ever thought about trying meditation, and even if you never gave it a thought but are just curious, give this book a try. You have nothing to lose but 8 minutes and you stand to gain a benefit that you can take advantage of for the rest of your life. We do so much for other people; this is 8 minutes where we do something for ourselves.

Some might say "only 8 minutes?" How much good could that do? But it's a good way to get started if you want to get into meditation. It adds up over the course of 8 weeks. It's a little irritating getting beyond the opening pages of the book to the actual meditation part but it turns out to not be so hard, at least for 8 minutes at a time. Some of the meditations will work for you better than others. It's worth a try.

Want to meditate? Can't meditate. Tried to meditate? Can't meditate. Gave up on ever meditating ... until I found this book in the bookstore (or it found me!). I'm 4 weeks into it and can't believe it (since I'm a master procrastinator). And, I already feel the benefits. This book is so clear, concise and speaks directly to the "real" questions beginning meditators have (even "what do I do if I have to pee!")
The problems with other meditation books, for me, were they were way too overwhelming and complex - and I felt I had to master some Zen-type state instantly. 8-Minute Meditation showed me that meditating is not "magic" but rather a simple learning process, like learning a musical instrument. You must know the basics, have a great teacher (Victor is) and practice! And unlike when I took piano lessons for an hour a day (ugh) - 8 minutes is a breeze and makes meditating fun and easy, rather than a chore. I never thought I'd say this - but I look forward to it everyday. Wow! I can finally say "I meditate!"
